Looking at a Gamified LMS Platform

The other day I had the opportunity to take a look at a product by a UK company, Growth Engineering.

The name of the product is the Academy Platform LMS.

And with a description of the LMS starting like this…you know it is going to be fun and interesting.

There is an unruly mass of deadly dull eLearning platforms out there; Learning Management Systems designed with the base level of functionality in mind. The general approach is as follows: login and plug away. The problem, for most users, is that this offers all the appeal of a minor head-cold. We believe that learning does not have to be a drag. Growth Engineering hold that the learning experience should interest and engage the student – not put them to sleep. Is it so much to ask that our learning experience should be fun?

Love it…”all the appeal of a minor headcold.” I was introduced to the company by Alice Goacher and given a tour of the platformby Jennifer Zapp and had a wonderful conversation with the founder Juliette Denny.

The platform was built with gamification elements from the ground up so it has a Juliette system with points and everything native to the application. The interface is fun and not stuff like some LMS interfaces and it provides an attractive place to view courses and take online programs.

Here are some screen shots are below.

Alice and Juliette explained that with the platform has been well received by clients and that the learners are eager to participate within the platform when they know they can be social and compare progress with others. Of course, there is a balance between learning and competing but the platform seems to be able to handle that balance and provides features to keep points, badges and leaderboards from running amok.

The platform provides a nice balance of gamification features as well as “serious” LMS features required by an organization. it shows that using an LMS doesn’t have to be boring. It can be interesting and engaging.

The admin area provides plenty of visual elements and insights into learner progress.

Both the administration areas and the learner areas contain features you would expect in a gamified LMS platform. These enable the learner to understand what courses need to be taken next, what courses lead to what rewards and how the classes/courses lead to success.

Doing well in the courses and making progress leads to the earning of badges.

So if you are looking for a LMS and you want some gamification elements to help increase engagement and track learner progress, consider checking out Growth Engineering’s Academy LMS.
