Two Software Tools for Creating Simulations

Here are two tools that can be used for creating effective and engaging simulations. Let me know of other tools.

SimWriter

Screen Capture from SimWriter simulation creation software.

What started as a tool for internal simulation development is now a patented authoring tool available to license and use for your own e-learning simulation development. It is now on version 3.0 and features, among other things, all-in-one application: map, author, design, build, and test all within the same tool,
Flash-based tool allows other Flash objects to be linked into simulations, or whole simulations to be run inside other Flash files and the only required software for simulation playback is free Flash Player, contains libraries of customizable environments, characters, and design layouts and the simulations are 100% customizable.

CodeBaby

CodeBaby offers a diverse selection of characters, over 300 realistic drag-and-drop animations, and automatic lip syncing that accommodates recordings in any language, CodeBaby Studio makes it possible to add an animated character to e-learning. The characters and animations are rendered up as standard Flash®. This cross-platform format works with various LMS and courseware applications on the market today. Studio features a convenient drag-and-drop interface with hundreds of animations to invigorate eLearning applications. Add motions and gestures to the production timeline for more engaging eLearning content.

I saw SimWriter at DevLearn and, while it looked robust, I was shocked at the five digits price for the full product. I could be wrong but it also seems as though it’s not being updated for modern OSes such as Windows 7 (and it is Win only). For many people, including me, these two facts effectively take it off the list of possible sim tools I would consider, which is indeed unfortunate. I hope they update the product and reduce the price.

2 great tools I use for animated characters are Media Semantics (mediasemantics.com) and crazytalk 6 (realillusion.com).
