When to Use Which Type of #Gamification
Yesterday, I wrote about two types of gamification for learning. And one of the comments was about “when do I use each kind for learning.” Good question, here are a couple of ideas. It is not that they both can’t be used but here is what I think is the better of the two for each instance. When used together, the combination is the most effective for motivational and instructional outcomes. I think from a learning perspective, content gamification has the most promise but there are some instances when structural gamification can be influential in assisting a learner in learning new information. It just needs to be done carefully.
- Motivate learners to move through a curriculum–Structural Gamification
- Motivate learners through engaging content–Content Gamification
- Encourage learners to return to a curriculum on regular basis–Structural Gamification
- Influence learner behavior–Content Gamification and Structural Gamification
- Drive learners to innovate–Content/Structural Gamification
- Encourage learners to independently build skills or acquire knowledge–Structural Gamification
- Teach learners new content, information and knowledge–Content Gamification
