A Conversation with Paul Rosa: Co-Founder of Sploops!
One of my many roles at Bloomsburg University is as the Assistant Director of the Entrepreneurial Leadership Center (ELC) where we encourage college students to think about starting their own business. One team of student’s I’ve had the pleasure of working with are Paul Rosa and Sean Roth who recently secured $115,000 Investment for a sports App they are developing (It’s going to be big). My role was to help coach them through the business plan competiton and bring university resources to bare when needed. The two are about the launch the app and so here is part of the conversation we had the other day. I urge you to help them by joining their Facebook page and Thunderclap page. Let’s encourage these two young entrepreneurs.
Kapp: What is this thing called Sploops?
Rosa: Sploops is a brand-new sports conversation app launching to the Apple App Store in November. Sports fans can finally put a face to their name and interact through 15 second video rants and polls. It’s the first video sports form of its kind. We believe it is the next big thing in mobile sports communication. You can check out our Facebook Page Here (give us a Like)!
Kapp: How did you get the idea?
Rosa: Sploops was an idea that we had back in college in 2012. As sports fans we were sick and tired of online sports forums that had no emotion. It was just text-based post after text-based post.
We started to forecast the future of mobile apps and how video would eventually become huge in the app world. We determined that there really wasn’t a platform where sports fans could be seen and heard with video in an online sports forum.
We decided to create the first video sports forum.
Kapp: How can people support the Sploops company?
Rosa: They can definitely follow all of our social media channels! We are on Facebook! And we are @sploopsapp on Twitter and Instagram!
We also recently launched a Thunderclap page. Thunderclap is a way for companies and ideas to get exponential reach all at one time through social media. By supporting our campaign you are pledging a post on Facebook or Twitter! It only takes a few seconds to support and back the campaign.
We need to get to at least 250 supporters. We are already halfway there! (HELP THEM OUT HERE!)
You can also visit our website Sploops.com and sign up for app launch alerts and information!
Kapp: As a college student taking classes and starting a business, how did you manage your time?
Rosa: It was definitely difficult. It took up a lot of our free time. But we knew it was worth it and could lead to something great.
We really had to get things done during weird hours. Sometimes we would wake up really early before class and sometimes we would stay in on the weekends and work on things until the early morning.
The best thing about it is that even though it was hard work, it was so much fun. We were creating something from scratch. It was literally an idea in our head and we turned it into a mobile app.
Kapp: What advise do you have for other college students who might want to form a business?
Rosa:College students may feel that they are very busy during school. But honestly you will never have more free time than you do in college. It’s the perfect time to lay the foundation for a business. No one is going to hand it to you. If you have a great idea grab it by the horns and make it happen!
Obviously the goal is to succeed. But even if you fail you will find that you gained experience and a wealth of knowledge in the world of entrepreneurship. That experience is so valuable for your long term professional growth.
The college years and your early 20s are the time to take a risk. Go for it!
