Combining Zombies and Running…Gamification of Exercise
As someone who has been actively running for a year or so I know how difficult it is too get motivated to wake up on a cool rainy morning and go for a run. Still this year I managed to run 3 sprint-length triathalons, a couple of 5Ks and one half-marathon (it wasn’t pretty).
All this exercises is great but motivation is still an issue for me that’s why I sign up for the races so that I am motivated to practice so I don’t fall over in the race but…I’d like more motivation, something to really get me running.
Enter ZOMBIES, RUN! it is not only a running motivation application but its includes a story narrative that unfolds every time you run.

Here is the story of the zombie game and how it works:
You tie your shoes, put on your headphones, take your first steps outside. You’ve barely covered 100 yards when you hear them. They must be close. You can hear every guttural breath, every rattling groan – they’re everywhere. Zombies. There’s only one thing you can do: Run! So, in the game, you are Runner 5 and hundreds of lives are counting on you. You’ve got to help your base rebuild from the ruins of civilization by collecting critical supplies while avoiding roving zombie hordes. As you run, you “collect” certain items and then you can add those items to your “base” when you return home. The larger and more fortified you base the better and, at certain times in the game, a person from headquarters tells you about zombies getting closer so you have to run faster…interval training.
I can’t wait to try this app. I spend a lot of time trail running and wonder how running in the woods with stories of zombies all around will make me feel and run.
They are in the process of raising monies for the venture.

I saw the kickstarter page a few weeks ago and thought it was a great concept! I might even start running, now that zombies are involved. I guess this reinforces the idea of having a story line for motivating a user/learner etc…
