You want to teach leaders about Strategy: Have them Play Civilization V
Civilization V is a turn based strategy game where players attempt to lead a civilization from prehistoric times into the future on a procedurally-generated map, achieving one of a number of different victory conditions through research, diplomacy, expansion, economic development, government and military conquest. A player wins by achieving the highest-scoring civilization. Players allocate limited resources, plan movements in advance, improve land, maintain roads, develop culture, determine what technologies to research, engage in diplomatic exchanges, and determine the cost and trade offs with waging war.
The skills required include the higher order problem-solving skills and, while playing the game, the player must:
- Think strategically about their positioning, analyze opponent strengths and weaknesses, plan how to achieve game goals, and execute those plans;
- Master resource management — managing people, money, food, and natural resources — and learn to acquire and apply force multipliers such as knowledge and technology;
- Interact with systems and understand the interaction of variables;
- Multi-task, manage complexity, respond to rapidly changing scenarios, and make decisions;
- Learn compromise and trade-off in satisfying the needs of diverse constituencies.
- Manage complex relationships; and• Exercise leadership, team building, negotiation, and collaboration;
- Keep citizens happy;
- Balance ambition with compassion
All skills and talents required to lead and manage the projects and co-workers. Skills that are being taught in the best business and law schools in the country but that must also be taught to as many individuals as possible so that organizations and institutions can remain competitive. So instead of creating a brand new leadership program, instead consider gathering together future leaders and playing a game.
You’ll be surprised at the result.
